MHS Interact Club’s Fight Against Food Insecurity Continues
In April of 2020, when the pandemic made it difficult for families to obtain food, the Madison High School Interact Club reacted to the local need by appealing to the Madison community to help fill a bus with food. The community’s generosity filled a box truck and inspired the students to develop a sustainable service project that would continuously stock the local pantry at the First Baptist Church of Madison. The Club called it “Madison Ends Hunger”.
Every other Saturday, for 6 years, since July of 2020, the Interact Club, in partnership with Madison Rotary, has collected food and delivered it to the pantry. Here is the impact that their service project has had:
Over 200 generous Madison families have donated more than 7500 bags of food
with an estimated value of $250,000
Over 75 students, Rotary members and friends have volunteered to drive collection routes and have never missed a collection over 156 scheduled Saturdays
The service project enabled the pantry to become part of the Interfaith Food Pantry Network which provides eggs, milk and fresh produce to the pantry.
The impact of the Madison Ends Hunger service project has surpassed all the expectations that the Madison High School Interact Club and Madison Rotary had back in July of 2020. And most importantly, it has enabled the First Baptist Church’s pantry to provide food to those local families that have experienced food insecurity over the last six years. Both the Interact Club and Madison Rotary are thankful to everyone that has participated in this on-going project.
