New Jersey Forests: Threats, Restoration, and Protection

Sara Webb, Professor emerita of Biology and Environmental Studies at Drew University, is a forest ecologist and the director of the Drew University Forest Restoration Project.

Sara will discuss how to care for our diverse but beleaguered forests to ensure their future.  Active forest restoration efforts like that in the Drew Forest Preserve are essential to bring back  biodiversity and young trees, now lost to deer and invasive vegetation.  Another threat is today’s logging management of  public conservation lands.  This practice, often called “thinning” or “stewardship,” actually clears large swaths of our oldest, healthiest forests.
