Welcome Japanese Students
On Thursday, August 1st, Madison Rotary hosted a welcome dinner for over 100 people held at the Community House on Cook Avenue.  There were 28 Japanese students, leaders, chaperones, host families, and Madison Rotarians.  The Short Term Youth Exchange program is in its 45th year.  Each year Rotary District 7475 sends 30 American students to Japan the 1st three weeks of July and receives 30 Japanese students the 1st three weeks of August.  A special thank you to the host families who open their homes to make the students feel welcome.  Building goodwill, peace and international understanding is one of the goals of Rotary and this programs exemplifies that goal.  Special thanks to the Rotary cooks Michel Belt, Jeannie Tsukamoto, Frank Mangravite and Barry Kroll who prepared spaghetti dinner for the group.  Several other Rotarian helped with organization, set up, clean up and more.
Camp Merry Heart - August 8th
Come this Wednesday, August 7, 2019, 2:30 - 5:30 pm to Camp Merry Heart Service Day.  Each year the District participates in a service day carnival for physically challenged campers at Camp Merry Heart.  This year under the leadership of John Hoover, we will provide one of the games.  We need a group of Rotarians to help manage the process.  Thanks to John Hoover for filling in for Stacey Russo who is celebrating his 10th wedding anniversary.  Contact johnhoover@msn.com  - 914-525-5771 to let him know you will be there.

Ray Freaney - District Governor

Over 150 Rotarians from the Rotary District 7475 were on hand in West Orange on June 24th when Ray Freaney, from Madison Rotray, was formally installed as the 2019-2020 District Governor. Past District Governors were invited to attend and participate in a "Passing of the Gavel" ceremony as part of the program. More than 17 PDGs participated in this special event, each sharing their yearly theme as they pass the gavel from one to the other.  All District officers were also inducted. It was a wonderful fellowship event. Participants enjoyed wonderful selection of food and drinks. Thanks to the committee members who worked hard to put this event together.
101 Rotary Facts to Know #36
The Secretariat – RI World Headquarters
Many Rotarians consider the Secretariat simply another name for the RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA. Actually, it is much more. While it does include the World Headquarters, the Secretariat encompasses nearly 800 individuals working to make Rotary International run smoothly and effectively. The term describes the entire operations of the general secretary and his staff. The Secretariat also includes eight Rotary Service Centers around the world, all of the staff serving in those centers, as well as all staff assigned to The Rotary Foundation. Its sole purpose is to serve the clubs, districts and administrative officers of Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation. RI World Headquarters, in a building called One Rotary Center in Evanston, is the headquarters of the Secretariat. One Rotary Center, as it is called, enhances the efficient operations of Rotary International.
Ebulletin Story

Do you have a story or a piece of news that can be  shared with our Club?  If you are a committee chair, the leader of a project, a club member, write a short paragraph describing your event, activity, accomplishment or upcoming event, send it to newsletter editor Barrykroll@aol.com.  We want club members to be aware of individual and club accomplishments, upcoming events, when volunteers are needed, information about Rotary, etc.  If you have a picture it always adds to the readability of the story.
$5,000 in Scholarships
22 applications for Madison Rotary's "Service Above Self" scholarship award were received this year.  The top eight students were interviewed by the Scholarship Committee and five students, Emily Axelsen, Sara Massey, Heather McCulloch, Julia Sales and Amanda Smith were selected to receive $1,000 scholarship awards.  The students will be recognized at Madison High School awards ceremony to be held on June 20th.  All of the students attend Madison High School with the exception of Emily Axelsen who attends Gill St. Bernards.

Madison Rotarians Having Fun
25 Madison Rotarians and Guests enjoyed a Somerset Patriots baseball outing at TD Ballpark in Bridgewater.  Fortunately we were not deterred by the 90 degree hot weather - we did have an air conditioned suite for a little relief.  Our Suite was located directly behind home plate in the upper level.  We paid attention to the foul balls many of which came our way.  We thank the Somerset Patriots for there generosity of donating this Suite to Taste of Madison.  The Suite was purchased by Barry Kroll in the silent auction at the the Taste and shared with the Club.
